Humboldt Tennessee 38343
Location and General Information
Humboldt is located in the central section of Western Tennessee in Gibson County. It is 85 miles northeast of Memphis, 135 miles west of Nashville, and 40 miles east of the Mississippi River.

Gibson County was created by an Act of Legislature in October, 1823 and named for Colonel John H. Gibson who built a trading port in 1818 on the banks of the North Fork of the Forked Deer River. John C. Gillespie who established a store in the 1850’s owned the first business in Humboldt.

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad was completed in 1859 and Humboldt was chartered in 1866.

Among the early settlers in Gibson County was the famous pioneer Davy Crockett. Crockett served on the first jury of the Circuit Court in 1824, and later was elected as the first U. S. Congressman of the new territory.

Humboldt is the home of the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival, held the first full week in May. The Festival was established in 1934 and attracts over 100,000 people every year. It is a nationally recognized event and has led to the establishment of the Strawberry Festival Historical Museum.

Modern Humboldt is the trade center for the surrounding area. The town is a pleasant blend of industry, retail trade and agriculture.

Recent highway improvements, including the expansion of US 45 W to four lanes, have made Humboldt more accessible to all major markets for business and industry.

Humboldt invites new industry and encourages business development while retaining a community atmosphere. The logo "Our hometown, Your hometown" displayed on the above ground water tanks is more than just a slogan; it is an invitation to join a progressive community where quality of life is still important.
